Let me set the stage here for you. I’m standing in a record shop with a bag of cassettes politely trying to explain to a man with a tucked in polo shirt what Baldy Longhair is about. Suffice it to say I wasn’t successful. Defeated I headed back out and on to the next shop. It was a really long walk outta that place and back to my car too. At least that’s how it felt. They can’t all be winners but damn this particular shop owner was pretty blunt with his disgust for… well me I guess. I suppose I wouldn’t be the first punk to feel a little cast aside, put down, misunderstood, disenfranchised, and so forth, but I was really letting it get to me in that moment. As I drove on to the next shop on my list I threw “…Are Healthy” by The Disconnects on my car stereo. Before you knew it my mood started to pick up. Their song Frustration was exactly what I needed to hear. I was ready to give it another shot. The next record shop I hit I went in with renewed vigor. I actually had a good time chatting this owner up. And he even took a bunch of tapes. At one point he told me “If you’ve got the balls to make and sell tapes in this day and age, who am I to turn you down? People say I’m crazy for running a record shop!” The rest of my travels were met with similar ups and downs and ins and outs. But at the end of two straight days of driving around a few shops now have Baldy Longhair tapes on their shelves. And hopefully more will follow. I’m sure of it. Check to see if your local shop carries Baldy tapes. If they don’t and you’d like them to, let us know… or better yet let them know. We’d appreciate it.

I guess the bigger point in the story I just told or at least the one thing I keep coming back to in my head anyway, is that all my life music has been my therapy. Name any emotion you either want to counteract or exacerbate and I’ll give you a tune or twenty to listen to. One of the main reasons for starting this label was a want for spreading the music that I dig and showcasing bands that I like. But on another level I’m hoping that maybe at some point one person that bought one of our tapes throws it on when they’re in a bad place and gets something/anything out of it that makes them feel at least a little better. That’s actually more important to me than the six dollars I got from them. I mean that.

Six months in… four releases under our belts, three more on the way, a ton of positive reviews (many of which you can now find on the fancy new product pages in our webstore), countless shows, new friends, and a positive outlook on the future of the label. Check out all our great current releases by The Disconnects, Through Thorn And Brier, Crazy & The Brains, and St. Sunday. And stay tuned for future releases by Vultures United, The Scandals, and our first vinyl offering… a split 7″ between Crazy & The Brains and The Disconnects that will include a limited run of tapes for the first few people who pre-order. But more on that later.

For now though if you’re feeling down about something sing along with me and The Disconnects…

This is a wake, an involuntary shake-up
When every single day is a struggle just to be who you are
And it’s a cop out , when they label you the wrong crowd
Don’t you ever let them cast you aside or put you up on the shelf
And it might take a little time just to figure it out
But sooner or later you’re gonna find out what it’s all about
I know that you’re laughing down there, I know and I don’t care
Frustration, it’s a daily aggravation and sometimes it might seem
Like there’s no end in sight, like right now
Open your eyes up, and take a look at your surroundings man
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who really cares
I know it’s hard man, but you gotta do the best you can
You gotta pick yourself up off the ground, get up and try it again
Have you been put down and kicked around all of your life?
Who are they to tell you what’s wrong and right?
I know that you’re laughing down there, I know and I don’t care
Frustration, I need a permanent vacation
Don’t you hate to see a good man kicked when he’s down?
It’s not you only, everybody gets lonely, sometimes there aint never no such thing
As a second chance, so drink up

I watched a clip from the new Beavis and Butthead show today online. It may not seem a that long ago but let me put it in perspective for you. The first time I watched that show I was a freshman in high school (1992ish). Mtv still played music videos (sometimes even good ones). You didn’t watch things online… there was really no “online” cept chat rooms and BBS systems. Kurt Cobain had all his brains in his head. Radiohead played electric guitars. Lars Frederiksen was still a punk (yeah I know, low blow). And most importantly (and the part of this blog post) I listened to most of my music on tapes. I had a walkman, a double tape deck in my parents attic that I used to make mix tapes, a big ass boombox I’d carry to work with me so I could listen to tapes whilst scooping ice cream for fat shitty children and their terrible parents, and a car tape deck/tape eater in my mom’s Dodge Omni which I would soon be lucky enough to borrow. I didn’t buy CDs cause they were too much money and they skipped. Also I couldn’t afford a CD player. Even when I did finally get a CD player, I copied most of them to tape so I could take them on the go. Yes I realize that makes no sense but that’s what I’d do. And for a while. A long while now, tapes have been out of my life. Replaced by vinyl, CDs, and mp3s.

But like Beavis and Butthead, tapes are now coming back. And they should. Sometimes things go away and we don’t know why. And when they come back, if they come back, we get nostalgic. But also we start to remember how great they really were. Technology is astounding. I have my iPhone in my hand about 70% of the day. Everything is wireless. If the internet goes out I get nervous. Amazing as it all is it’s a little cold. When we were kids we’d often go camping. People do this as a way of getting back to nature. A way to free themselves from modern living. Listening to tapes and vinyl for me is like getting back to nature. Take a deep breath. Soak it all in. Relax. Have a coffee. Have a beer. Have another. Flip sides. Flip em again. Make a mix tape. No not a fucking playlist! A good damn mix tape. It’s more than just a few clicks and drags of a mouse. It’s an art. Think about the time you have on each side. Think about the order in which the songs should go. Make a rad cover for it. Might take you all day. Might take you all night. But take the time to really consider the music.

Some people might think a tape only label in this day and age is a bad idea. I can’t think of a better one. Really. Cept maybe bringing back Beavis and Butthead. My people…they are without TP. And i’m gonna give it to ‘em.

If you work for any such fine punk establishment hit us up at baldylonghair@gmail.com.

Other than that stay tuned for more new release news in the weeks and months to come (one big one in fact involving carnivorous birds and women). And please come out and see some of the bands working with us when they play your area.

In this digital age of e-faxes and i-jammers, you might be wondering why I set up a PO Box for Baldy. If you’re not down with the whole pay pal thing and you want to send me duckets the ol fashioned way I want the envelopes kept somewhere safe (ie not in my unlocked mailbox outside where anyone can jack your funds).

You know how many forms of ID you need to get a PO Box? Two. And a Passport only counts as one. This is more information than you need to get paid on a new job, and slightly less than to get a drivers license. I don’t know why but this fascinates me.

So the point is this… send me some demos and I’ll surely listen to em. Send us an SASE and we’ll send you some stickers. Send us a postcard from your next vacation if the mood strikes ye. Send us a creepy and inappropriate love letter if you wish… but please no fatties.

There’s nothing worse than ordering something and waiting for it to arrive and having it get to you already smashed to pieces. A warped record. A cracked jewel case. An unhinged cassette case. At least gimme the opportunity to break these things on my own damnit!

One thing I really want to make sure of is that all Baldy releases arrive to you in the same minty fresh condition as when I sent them. So for that reason we’re only using Uline Cassette Mailers. Now these mothers can only withstand 200 lbs of pressure. If you have a 201 lb mail carrier who likes to step on shit you may be fucked. And in the unlikely event that something like that or worse happens to your tapes while en route, hit me up with an email and Baldy’ll make it right.

With this blog, I’m going to try and take you through the saga that is putting out sick tapes.

So far it’s been pretty easy on me. Scribbling ideas on pieces of paper at work and on the train. Going to shows and drinking beers with the Baldy bands. Contacting vendors and laying the groundwork. The real heavy lifting of course is being done by the bands themselves. I’ve been lucky enough that all the guys I’ve been dealing with are all driven and talented. A few of them have gotten me some of their tracks and all I can say is that I’m soooo majorly stoked to have been given the opportunity to put their stuff out on such an amazing format.

The other heavy lifting has been by my wife. Tirelessly and painstakingly building baldylonghair.com from the ground up. And also dealing with me and all my ridiculous ideas, scams, schemes, and dreams. Knowing I’m crazy but supporting and believing in me anyway.

Finally a huge debt of thanks is owed to one dr. julio kikujiro kim. A friend for many years that I’ve been on a many punk rock adventures with that also believed in me enough to throw down some funds to make Baldy happen. I can’t even begin the think of all the tapes we swapped in high school and all the shows we went too and all the fun we had.

Be sure to check back with this blog often for more news, announcements, and goings on in the baldy universe. I’ll try and keep ya’ll posted every step of the way with how and why I’m doing what I’m doing.

Hey man if you love tapes so much, why are you including download codes?

Listen I’m a realist. I know that most of you probably have phones the size of a cassette or smaller that carry say about 1000x more music on them. I’m one of these people too. It never ceases to blow my mind how far technology has come in such a short period of time. But portability and ease of use is for great for when you’re out and about in the world. On a subway. Hitting the pavement. Riding a bus. And so on. When you’re home you should have the luxury of sacrificing portability for sound quality. Too lazy to flip the sides of a record? Hey man get a tape deck with auto-reverse.

I can’t tell you how many times it happens that I’m listening to a digital version of an album on my ipod while running around with my day to day, and then I get to finally throw down the analog copy with a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning and it’s like I’m listening to something entirely different. Something better. Fuller. Wider. More Expansive. I’d be willing to bet that many folks would say they don’t care. They just want the music and that’s enough. I respect that too. I really do. But I’m giving you both options just in case. Give it a chance, your ears will thank you.

When I set out on the venture that is Baldy Longhair Records first and foremost I wanted to find a bunch of bands that I really and truly liked, but also a bunch of bands that show just how amazingly broad the punk genre can be. And I mean “broad” in the best possible way. For me punk rock is doing whatever you want. Ignoring trends. Ignoring fashion. Just being your own damn funky self. If it weren’t for this attitude we never would’ve had bands like The Minutemen. If it weren’t for this attitude we’d all be boring carbon copies. Listen you don’t need a mohawk to be a punk. If you want one, hey go for it. But don’t feel forced. Hell, rock a baldy longhair if it feels right to you. And I think if you listen to all the bands I’m putting out you’ll see in each one of them that they’re doing what feels right for them. Take it or leave it. (We hope you take it.)

Baldy is for the real music lovers. The ones that don’t care about genres or labels. The ones that’ll listen to whatever moves them regardless of what it’ll look like. The people that love to sit around and talk about music as much as they love to sit around and listen to it. The people that consider listening to music it’s own thing, that is to say not just something in the background of their daily life (although it’s often that too). Recently I tried explaining to a non-music lover that sometimes I just sit at home and listen to music and it blew their mind. They couldn’t understand just sitting in a room with some tunez and a set of liner notes and doing that. I hope you do.

Why tapes? Man if you need to ask that you don’t know. Tapes are the shit. The ultimate punk format. What? Vinyl you say? Yeah vinyl rules. I agree. But you ever blast a record from an ’88 Dodge Omni? You ever make your own record at home to share with friends? You ever throw a record around like a piece of trash and still have it play flawlessly? Tapes are small, (almost) indestructible pieces of plastic analog amazingness. Even when they fail reach for a pencil and fix that fucker right back up.

It’s no surprise to me that tapes are making a comeback. It’s no surprise people are actually seeking them out. They’re inexpensive and awesome. Two traits that also define punk rock. While I don’t expect people to seek out used walkmen on eBay and start carrying them around town like this was 1992, I do hope at least some if not all of you will throw one on at home and let your neighbors know how baldy rolls.

Baldy Longhair Records is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Lemme start with the name. When I was coming up, a young fledgling upstart punk without any clue of where the music would take me I’d go to our shitty local record shop and stare at racks and racks of cassette tapes. I’d look for band names on the spines that I either A) vaguely heard of or B) thought just sounded rad. I’m sorry to say buying that Fudge Tunnel tape or that King Missile tape probably weren’t the most informed decisions I ever made (although Martin Scorscese is still a pretty killer tune). I probably bought 3 bad tapes for every good one for a while. At the time I thought they were ALL HITS (to steal a line from Speedo). Rollins Band’s End of Silence? One of my first choice picks. And I was just getting started. My good friend and frequent co-hort Paddy X dubbed one dude that worked at our local shop “baldy longhair”. Check our logo if you’re not sure why. I should probably mention once more that this record store fucking sucked. It blew. Hard. But again, this was before I knew to take a bus or a train into NYC to find the real deal. So I look fondly on those times. The world was open. My opinions weren’t as informed but maybe that was a good thing. And I hope someday some kid somewhere buys a tape off my label and has the same wide eyed stare I did as he or she blasts it. And I hope it leads them to more bands and more places and more ideas. And maybe we’ll just keep this thing going.
